Very Hard Approaches

Some fun approaches

Washington Reagan Natl., US:
I like the KDCA LDA approach, also the River Visual. Late turn, relatively short runway.
Your ride: B757, B737; MD80

Nice Cote d'Azur, France:
LFMN is nice, too, when landing west. Late turn after heading directly onto the main boulevard of the City of Nice.
Your ride: Feel free to bring some heavy metal.

Elba, Marino di Campo, Italy:
LIRJ's RWY16 calls for a steep descent. Be sure to get some charts and give the visual a try, very scenic arrival from the east.
Your ride: King Air, Dash 8

Courchevel, Switzerland France:
LFLJ's runway is a one-direction-only and slopes upwards. I must admit I never did it in X-Plane, dunno how good Global Scenery is for that particular one. The airport is surrounded by mountains. The runway heavily slopes upwards, one-direction only. No missed approach.
Your ride: King Air etc.

Madeira, Funchal, Spain Portugal:
LPMA calls for a late right turn. In real life the runway is built on a enormous bridge-like structure that extends into the sea. Also see Andrew Herd's excellent tutorial.
Your ride: Feel free to bring some heavy metal.

Saint George, UT, US:
KSGU is located on a table-top mountain, short runway. Approaching RWY 16 is tricky as there is a mountain ridge close parallel to the extended centerline. Late left turn from a westerly course to line up. Beautiful area, really "Marlboro Country"-ish . Enjoy Utah's Dixie!
Your ride: Anything up to the size of a Citation. Skywest brings a EMB-120 in there twice a day.

Tegucigalpa Toncontin Intl., Honduras:
MHTG is located in a narrow valley. Challenging approach with a short runway (6.100 ft) at high elevation (3.100 ft). South (/Central) America at it's best!
Your ride: B727, B757

Innsbruck Kranebitten, Austria:
Follow some deep valleys on your approach into LOWI with high terrain surrounding the airport. Andrew Herd has a written a great tutorial about the approach.
Your ride: A320, B737, B757

Santos Dumont, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil:
SBRJ must be the most beautiful approach in the world. Great fun when landing North as you have to circle above the beautiful city of Rio for your approach. Plus: a real spotter's paradise, because there is a road that crosses the runways in real life  (click smily)...!
Your ride: A319, B737-300, -700 (add some realism by using Guilherme's great VASP, GOL and VARIG repaints found on this site!)

Aspen Pitkin County, CO, US:
High mountains and steep valleys around KASE make for some great fun. Try the circle-to-land procedure. Then do it again at night and with bad weather, it's gonna scare the sh*t outta ya! Very scenic, even better in the wintertime (Howdy's winter textures *hint*hint*). Watch your speed as the approach path is very steep. Also see another one of Andrew Herd's great tutorials! Want a dramatic T/O -- load your plane to MTOW!
Your ride: one of Andreas Benjamin's great Avroliners (the biggest planes that are allowed into KASE).

Kathmandu, Nepal:
VNKT uses one of the most difficult approaches in the world. No ILS here, lots of mountains (Himalaya -- top of the world) and a steep descent make this one a challenge. Strict adherence to published crossing altitudes vitally required! You'll be rewarded with some scenic views on the way... And you already guessed it, Andrew Herd has written another tutorial about this one. Funny thing: While enroute to this airport, you will already have mountains that are going as high as your cruising altitude! Very impressive views!
Your ride: B727, B757, B767, A300.

A few more airports, added 9/5:

London City Airport, UK
EGLC sits right in the middle of London. Steeper than normal glide path, short runway.
Your ride: The A318 was just recently certified to land there! Are you up for the challenge?

Mexico City Benito Juarez Intl., Mexico
MMMX is located at a huge bowl-like valley right in the middle of the city. Watch your speed on the approach. Turn on real weather and get some charts -- taking off with MTOW on a published departure really got me sweat! Hot and high!
Your ride: B747-400

Hilo Intl., HI, US
Start your approach into PHTO's runway 8 on the VOR/DME OR TACAN-A, then go visual. Late left turn, screeming low along the coastline over the city.
Your ride: B717, B737, B757

Honolulu Intl., HI, US
PHNL is a interesting to fly into when there are "Kona Winds" from westerly directions. Shoot the LDA Approach to 26 L along Waikiki beach, make a late left turn to line up.
Your ride: B777

Kilimajaro Intl., Tanzania
HTKJ is not particularly hard to approach, nevertheless something out of the ordinary. High descent rates required. Get the IAP here.
Your ride: Air Force One made it there. Will you try a 747?

Cali Aragon Intl., Colombia
Mountains to both side of the approach path that raise far above your altitude make landings in SKCL special. Sadly this airport gained notoriety when AA965, a B757, crashed into a 10kft mountain in 1995. There are charts for both runway 1 and runway 19, please note though that after the accident, which killed all 160 people on board the aircraft, Rozo NDB "R" has been replaced by Palma NDB "PL".

Pues el de Courchevel lo tengo superado, el "problemo" es en VFR (sin VOR ni NDB) encontarlo, al igual que Mont Louis.La  Quitllane, eso aerodromos si tuvieras aunque solo fuese un hangar, se localizarian bien
